THE HISTORY OF HERMÈS

Let us take a trip down the memory lane of Hermès…

Founded in Paris in 1837, the luxury brand continues to captivate millions of people year after year. While Hermès is certainly a timeless brand, understanding its past creates a finer appreciation for what the brand is today.

Kelly and Birkin: two namesakes in the world of Hermès. With these pieces carrying such an iconic connotation within the industry, it’s difficult to imagine a time without them.

Robert Dumas crafted what we now know as the “Kelly bag” in the 1930’s; but at that time, it was nameless. It wasn’t until over 20 years later in 1956 that the bag was named after the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly (an avid-lover of the bag).

The first tokened Birkin bag was created in 1984 through the inspiration of Jane Birkin. Who knew that the casual airplane interaction between Jane and former CEO Jean-Louis Dumas would become such a pivotal moment in Hermès history? And thus, the Birkin was born.

With these influential stories in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most memorable vintage pieces and advertisements…
